Smarter drug and alcohol treatment services in Windsor and Maidenhead

Monday 21st May 2012

A new ‘one-stop’ drug and alcohol treatment service commissioned by the Royal Borough is to be officially launched this week.

Friday 25 May sees the formal launch by the Mayor, Cllr Colin Rayner, of the new drug and alcohol service run by SMART Criminal Justice Service.

The Royal Borough’s drug and alcohol action team (DAAT) commissioned SMART following a robust tendering process and now for the first time drug and alcohol treatment is fully integrated, with services being provided by just one agency making it easier for residents to access services and more cost effective. SMART offers a comprehensive range of services for adults with substance misuse problems, including:

  • substance misuse advice, information and structured evidence based interventions
  • one-to-one counselling
  • family and friends support
  • structured day programme and peer support groups
  • open access ‘drop-in’ sessions
  • needle exchange
  • detox for alcohol clients
  • substitute Prescribing
  • harm minimisation advice, screening/vaccinations
  • complimentary therapies (acupuncture)
  • outreach work in the community.

The service will predominately operate from Sands Court in Grove Road, Maidenhead, but appointments and groups will be available from other locations including Windsor.

Cllr Simon Dudley, cabinet member for adult and community services, said: “Fortunately the borough does not have a huge drug problem, but the SMART service is a great addition to the borough. The drugs bus is an exciting new development and will allow residents to access advice, information and treatment in their own communities.”

Jenny Bryan, SMART service manager, said: “The team are delighted to be launching the new recovery service in Windsor and Maidenhead. We are able to offer a wide range of help for anyone wanting support, and are keen to make our services more accessible to residents across the borough. We welcome anyone who is worried about their drinking or drug use to get in touch to find out how we can help.

“SMART intends to deliver a service that supports people throughout their journey from first point of contact through to exit and to rebuild their lives free from the negative effects of drugs or alcohol.”
