Families, friends and carers of drug users and heavy drinkers often feel that they are faced with a situation they feel totally unequipped to deal with. From a lack of basic knowledge about the facts of drug and alcohol abuse, to the stigma they may feel they will receive if they speak up. Combine this with worries about their loved one breaking the law; it's unsurprising that many people feel they have nowhere to turn.
In response to these concerns, SMART, the counties commissioned provider of drug and alcohol services, are setting up a support group in Banbury to offer a place to turn for those whose life is affected by the drug and alcohol use of a friend or family member. At the initial 'Family and Carer Support Group Open Evening' in Banbury, SMART is offering people the opportunity to speak to their workers for advice and information, hear about our plans for the new family and carer service, and to make contact with others in a similar situation.
To find out more come to our Family and Carer Support Group Open Evening, 7pm–9pm on Tuesday 8th December at the new Banbury Health Centre, 58 Bridge Street, Banbury.
Darren Worthington SMART CEO says "The family and carer groups are an
important development in SMART's services.
Families and friends are the forgotten victims of drug and alcohol
abuse, and their needs often get overlooked.
By giving people a place to go, to ask questions and to meet others who
can understand their situation, we hope that the silence that many family
members feel surrounds their situation can be broken."
