1st July 2009

From 1 July 2009 SMART will launch its new Drug and Alcohol Services, offering a wide range of services for people with drug and alcohol issues across Oxfordshire.  Building on the services formerly provided by Cranstoun, SMART will offer:

  • Increased services for drug users such as Open Access Drop-in Services, Group Sessions, and One-to-One Support Sessions for problem drug users
  • A new alcohol services for advice information support and treatment
  • A new dedicated  family and carers support service.
  • A new mobile unit, enabling services visit more locations across the county and provide people with access to support regardless of where they live.

In 2008 SMART worked with over 900 clients in Oxfordshire most of whom were referred via the criminal justice system.  This new community-based services will allow anyone harmed by drug or alcohol use to access help and support.

"The impact which our service has on individuals is significant, with clients reporting greater self-awareness, a better understanding of sensible drinking, new structure in their lives (replacing boredom with goal setting) and a motivation to avoid high-risk situations.  I think clients appreciate the opportunity to talk to someone confidentially, and have someone support them through what is a difficult time."  SMART Alcohol Worker.

SMART's Chief Executive Darren Worthington says "Our aim is to provide drug and alcohol interventions that are accessible to all regardless of their location, or need. To achieve this we will be reaching out to all communities in Oxfordshire, particularly those with growing or hidden substance misuse problems, with a range of innovative services that support the individual throughout their journey towards a life that's free of drug and alcohol use.

Another key focus will be the development of support services that are specifically aimed at the families and carers of substance users as we believe the problems they experience as a result of living with the issues are often forgotten.

This an exciting time for SMART and a great opportunity for us to make an even greater contribution towards reducing the negative impact of drug and alcohol use across all of our communities. We are confident that in time the residents of Oxfordshire will have a service they can feel proud of."
