The impact of drug and alcohol misuse on us and our communities is wide-ranging.  It is estimated that one in five of us will be affected by drug or alcohol misuse at some point in our lives.  Our experiences will range from supporting loved ones or friends, to being the victim of a crime committed by someone to fund an addiction.

By empowering individuals to break the cycle of addiction, we can help them transform their future, and lead fulfilling and rewarding lives.  SMART worked with over 3,000 people across the Thames Valley in 2010.  The cost of providing our core work is financed by funding received for delivering contracts and from fundraising.

However big or small your gift is, you can be sure that it will mean a lot to the people SMART works with.  Some of the areas in which we will be investing in the future include:

• Improving Educational opportunities - It has been estimated that 65% of problematic drug users have very poor educational backgrounds. By improving the educational opportunities for recovering drug and alcohol users, their chances of staying clean and moving on also increases. Our Portal Programme helps people gain valuable qualifications and improve their employment prospects.

• Providing Work Experience - Developing our mentoring programme to offer increased and more varied work experience opportunities and continued up-skilling of our volunteers and mentors.

• Detoxification - Help someone who is unable to access funding take their first steps on their recovery journey: residential detoxification at Howard House.

Volunteer with us

The SMART Mentoring programme is a unique facility which offers support to current service users by volunteers.  It provides skills and knowledge to people, including those with previous drug and offending records, who want to turn their experiences into something positive and life enhancing.  Find out more about volunteering as a Mentor by visiting our Mentoring Programme pages.
