SMART CJS (Criminal Justice Services) charity is established, and launches an Arrest Referral Scheme in Oxford, Witney and Banbury. Over 100 offenders are given SMART cards and on-going support.
1997
Launch of the Bullingdon Prison Remand Project – to assess prisoners, offer treatment options (community or prison based) - to affect positive change.
1998
The Drug Related Offender Programme (DROP) is established as a community sentencing option, or offered to prisoners about to be released from custody. DROP provides a structured drugs intervention programme, tailored to individual needs.
1999
SMART is now working with 300 people a year.
2000
Funding from Trusts including Esmee Fairbairn, Tudor and Comic Relief is used to set up a big new Volunteers Programme.
2001
Stay ‘N’ Out SMART’s relapse prevention programme begins in local prisons.
2002
The Arrest Referral Programme is rolled out across the Thames Valley, with the capacity to work with over 750 people a year.
2003
A new helpline is set up for clients in West Berkshire.
2004
The Volunteering scheme becomes the SMART Mentoring and Access 2 programmes. In October 2008, Access 2 will be updated to become the Portal programme.
2005
SMART is now operating from a number of separate locations, across the Thames Valley, and is seeing over 1,500 people a year.
2006
In partnership with Oxfordshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team SMART sets up an aftercare service called Restart Plus.
2007
SMART launches an Alcohol Arrest Referral Scheme, to support an Oxfordshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team initiative called Transform.
2008
SMART comissioned by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to deliver a comprehensive arrest referral service and by Bracknell Borough DAAT to deliver Tier 2 and 3 Criminal Justice and Community Drug services.
2009
SMART launches the Oxfordshire Drug and Alcohol Service offering a wide range of community services for people with drug and alcohol issues and introduces the Berkshire East Alcohol Arrest Referral scheme.
